The Italian American Review (IAR), an interdisciplinary, bi-annual peer-reviewed journal of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, publishes scholarly articles about the history and culture of Italian Americans, as well as other aspects of the Italian diaspora. The journal embraces a wide range of professional concerns and theoretical orientations in the social sciences and in cultural studies. The journal entertains articles about such topics as migration, politics, labor, race and ethnicity, urban studies, gender studies, literary criticism, as well as various forms of cultural production (religious feasts, cinema, music, etc.), especially those addressing societal aspects. The IAR publishes book reviews, film and digital media reviews, exhibition reviews, and an occasional section of “Notes and Documents.” The IAR does not publish creative work such as poetry, fiction, or memoir.
DAVID ALIANO is professor of Italian and history at the University of Mount Saint Vincent in New York City and is the founding director of its BA program in Italian and Italian Diaspora Studies. He is the editor of the Italian American Review, the peer-reviewed journal of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, and is on the advisory board of H-TransItalian Studies. He holds a PhD in history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. His areas of research include modern Italy and Latin America; Italian transnational and comparative studies; national and ethnic identities; and Italian Fascism and anti-Fascism. He is the author of Mussolini’s National Project in Argentina (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2012), which was awarded the annual Outstanding Book Award of the Association for Ethnic Studies. He has also published widely on Italian emigration to other parts of the Americas as well as on notions of citizenship and the Italian vote abroad. His most recently published chapters appear in Philosophy, Travel, and Place: Being in Transit (Palgrave, 2018) and in Italy and the Military: Cultural Perspectives from Unification to Contemporary Italy (Palgrave, 2020). His current book project examines American travel encounters with Italy’s changing landscape in the twentieth century.
