Dear Fordham University Press Authors,
Fordham University Press is aware of the recent settlement decision in the Bartz v. Anthropic book authors' lawsuit. We are working with the Association of American Publishers, the Association of University Presses, and Fordham's Office of Legal Counsel to find FUP books and provide the necessary information to receive compensation.
Class Counsel has put together a set of FAQs to help address questions from potential claimants (including authors and publishers), which can be found here: https://www.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com/faq
This website also hosts a searchable database of works included in the settlement. Further information about how the works list was assembled is available in the FAQ prepared by Class Counsel beginning at FAQ 49.
In the first stage of this process, the court has requested our assistance to ensure adequate notice of the settlement and claims process to authors and other rightsholders. To that end, we are providing the Settlement Administrator (SA) with contact information for authors of our books involved in the settlement. The SA will keep this information strictly confidential and use it solely to provide notice of the claims process and, if warranted, payment. If your e-mail or mailing address has changed recently, please notify us at copyright@fordham.edu. You can also submit your contact information directly to the SA at info@AnthropicCopyrightSettlement.com. (Please use a subject line like “author confirming contact information” to ensure that you receive formal notice of the settlement and claims process. Providing your contact information is not the same as submitting a claim to receive payment for your works, which is a separate process.)
The deadline for filing a claim in this case is March 23, 2026. We understand that all claims filed before the deadline will be addressed at the same time, regardless of the order in which they are filed. While you may file your claim at any time through the above website, including before or after you receive notice from the SA, the notice sent from the SA is expected to include unique identifier(s) for your book(s) that will simplify the claims process. Direct notices will be sent to authors in late November 2025.
If you do not receive a direct notice from the SA by early December but believe you should have, or if you require other assistance, please contact the SA through www.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com. The website includes comprehensive information about the case and settlement and offers multiple avenues for getting your questions answered.
Sincerely,
Fredric Nachbaur, Director
